Free Child Safety Seat Inspection Event Tuesday, June 9, 2009
by Paul Elliott

With a goal of reducing the injuries and deaths of children involved in vehicle accidents, the
Wimberley Fire Department in conjunction with Wimberley Emergency Medical Services and Texans in Motion will be conducting a free child safety seat inspection event.

During the event, certified technicians will inspect the child safety seats to insure that the seats are the correct size for the child, meet current safety standards and have not been subject to a
manufacturer recall.

According to Shelly Zapp, Director for “Texans In Motion-Kids In Safety Seats Project”, funded by the Texas Department of Transportation motor vehicle crashes are the number one killer of children of all ages in Texas. The reason? Too often children involved in motor vehicle crashes are injured or killed because they are not secured properly in a child safety seat or a booster seat.  Also, many children are seen riding in vehicles using only a seat belt when they should be in a child safety restraint.

Child safety seats will be inspected on June 9, between the hours of 10 am and 1 pm at the
Wimberley Fire Department – Central Station located at 111 Green Acres Drive, Wimberley.  To schedule an appointment, call Assistant Chief Joseph Milks at (512) 847-3536 ext 103.  Each inspection will take approximately 30 minutes.  The child that will be using the seat needs to be present during the inspection to ensure proper sizing and placement of the child safety seat.

Those parents needing a child safety seat inspection that are unable to attend the June 9 Wimberley event should contact the Wimberley Fire Department to obtain information regarding other inspection events or schedule a private inspection with one of the Wimberley area technicians.  Inspections events will be held throughout Hays County on a monthly basis.  The event locations alternate between San Marcos, Wimberley and soon Buda.

New child restraint laws in effect September 1st
by Joseph Milks

Effective September 1st, the new Texas State Law will require all children younger than 8 years old,
unless taller than 4’9”, to be in an approved child passenger safety seat.

In preparation for the new changes to the law a site survey was conducted at Scudder Primary on May 27, 2009.  The survey found that 38 % of the children were not restrained and that 29 % of the children were improperly restrained using safety belts designed for person 54” tall or taller.  The survey also found that 9 % of the adults were not restrained upon exiting the school.  These results have shown a need for additional education of the parents and more car safety seats events in the Wimberley area.  Flyers were sent home with the children last week from Scudder Primary about the changes in the law and the upcoming child safety seat event next week.

Child safety seats will be inspected on September 8, between the hours of 1 pm to 4 pm at the
Wimberley Fire Department – Central Station located at 111 Green Acres Drive, Wimberley.  To schedule an appointment, call Assistant Chief Joseph Milks at (512) 847-3536 ext 103.  Each inspection will take approximately 30 minutes.  The child that will be using the seat needs to be present during the inspection to ensure proper sizing and placement of the child safety seat.
Those parents needing a child safety seat inspection that are unable to attend the September 8 Wimberley event should contact the Wimberley Fire Department to obtain information regarding other inspection events or schedule a private inspection with one of the Wimberley area technicians.
Inspections events will be held throughout Hays County on a monthly basis.  The event locations alternate between San Marcos, Wimberley and Buda.
